First Solar Decathlon ever held on the African continent

The Situation

The Solar Decathlon Africa 2019 was not just a competition — it was a landmark event. The first of its kind on the African continent, held in Ben Guerir, Morocco, it challenged university teams to design, build, and operate fully functional, energy-efficient homes judged across ten rigorous categories: Architecture, Engineering & Construction, Market Appeal, Comfort Conditions, Appliances, Sustainability, Home Life & Entertainment, Communication & Social Awareness, Electrical Energy Balance, and Innovation.

Freedom Builders — the construction arm of MHJ Genius Co Support Services — sponsored two competing universities, using the event as a high-visibility platform to establish market credibility and demonstrate what the company could deliver. The firm was still in its product development and market entry stage; this competition was its proof of concept.

Andre "Hassan" Wilson was brought in on a two-month contract as Project Manager and Subject Matter Expert. His mandate was clear: help the teams complete a build that would put Freedom Builders on the map.

What he inherited was anything but straightforward.


The Problem

Two compounding challenges hit before the first brick was laid.

Challenge 1: A Critical Supply Chain Failure

The machinery needed to produce the bulk of the building materials on-site failed to clear customs. This wasn't a minor setback — it eliminated the primary production method for the structural materials the build depended on. The team arrived at the competition significantly behind before work had even begun.

Challenge 2: Academic Teams Don't Run Like Construction Sites

The sponsored teams were made up of university students and faculty — intelligent, motivated, and deeply knowledgeable about sustainable design theory. But academic environments operate on different norms than professional construction. Standard project management practices — phased timelines, labor sequencing, materials-to-task mapping — were not in place. Decision-making was slow, politically navigated, and consensus-driven in a context where speed and decisive prioritization were survival requirements.

The combination of material shortages and an unstructured team operating under an unforgiving deadline created a real risk of non-completion — an outcome that would have been publicly visible at one of the continent's most watched construction and innovation events.


What Was Done

Sourcing Around the Problem

Unable to rely on the original production machinery, Hassan and his associate went to ground — identifying and securing masonry bricks from a local vendor in Ben Guerir. This shift required rapid supplier qualification, negotiation, and logistics coordination in an unfamiliar environment with a ticking clock. It also meant reconfiguring the entire build approach around what was now actually available.

Building a Real Project Timeline — Mid-Crisis

With materials and labor constraints now clearly defined, Hassan created a project timeline from scratch: task-sequenced, materials-dependent, and built around the actual labor available at each phase. Rather than a fixed plan, it was a living prioritization framework — updated as conditions changed, and designed to keep the team moving on what was possible rather than stalled on what wasn't.

Shifting the Team's Psychology

Perhaps the most consequential intervention wasn't logistical — it was cultural. Hassan had to convince a group of academics, operating in the shadow of a significant setback, that completing the build was not just possible but achievable within the timeline. He moved the team from doubt to momentum, aligning every member around a shared sequence of execution rather than a shared anxiety about the deficit.

Once that shift happened, the team moved.


The Outcome

In under one month of on-site construction — starting from a material shortage and with no pre-existing project management structure — the team completed a fully functional three-bedroom, two-bathroom single-family residence featuring:

At Africa's first-ever Solar Decathlon, Freedom Builders-sponsored teams delivered a completed, competition-winning home — built under constraint, on time, from a standing start — in front of an international audience of sustainability leaders, academics, and industry professionals.

For Freedom Builders, the result was exactly what it needed: a credible, high-visibility proof of concept that demonstrated the company's ability to deliver in complex, resource-constrained environments.


The Differentiator

The build succeeded not because conditions were favorable — they weren't — but because a structured mind was applied to an unstructured situation. Creating a working project timeline mid-crisis, sourcing materials from a cold start, and getting an academic team to operate at professional construction pace are three distinct skill sets. Deploying all three simultaneously, in a foreign country, in under a month, is what turned a potential public failure into a landmark win.
